Maile S.C. Kim, DDS

Pediatric Dentist

Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Dr. Maile Kim grew up observing her dad, Dr. Howard Kim, practice pediatric dentistry in Kailua, Hawai’i. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Pacific Union College and upon graduation decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and pursue a career in dentistry.

Following graduation with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in California, Dr. Maile moved to New York. She completed a one-year General Practice Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, followed by a two-year pediatric specialty residency at New York University College of Dentistry in Manhattan.

Dr. Maile is a board certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is also on the medical staff at Shriners Children’s Hospital where she treats patients under general anesthesia. Since 2009, she has been a consulting faculty for the Lutheran Medical Center Pediatric Dental Residency – Hawai’i training site. She has published research articles in the Journal of School Health and Pediatric Dentistry (2012).

Dr. Maile is a member of the American Academy of Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Hawai’i Dental Association, and Hawai’i Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has served on numerous outreach trips and provided dental care to underserved areas in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, India, Costa Rica, and Bolivia.


Bren M. Chun, DDS

Pediatric Dentist

Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Dr. Bren Chun was inspired to work with children after meeting Dr. Howard Kim and Dr. Maile Kim. He pursued a two-year residency in pediatric dentistry at Albert Einstein School of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York. Dr. Bren returned to Hawai’i to become part of the Kim Pediatric Dentistry team and family.

Dr. Bren graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music from Pacific Union College and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Lutheran Medical Center – Kokua Kalihi Valley Health Center. Dr. Bren so enjoyed caring for the people of Hawai’i that he decided to stay one more year, working in community health and private practice, before heading off to New York for training in pediatric dentistry.

Dr. Bren is a board certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a member of the American Academy of Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Hawai’i Dental Association, Hawai’i Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has served on numerous outreach trips and provided dental care to the underserved areas in South America, Thailand, Fiji, and Philippines.

Howard Y.B. Kim, DDS

Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Howard Kim received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in California. He received his commission in the Air Force after graduation. He volunteered for the Vietnam Conflict but instead was sent to Osan Air Force Base in Korea. He received an honorable discharge from the military at the completion of his term of service.

Dr. Kim reentered the civilian workforce at the Office of Economic Opportunity funded clinic in South Central Los Angeles. It was there that he honed in on his passion for caring for children. He was accepted into the pediatric dental residency at the University of Southern California, and upon completion of his training became the Chairman of Pediatric Dentistry at South Central Multipurpose Health Service Center in Los Angeles.

In 1975, Dr. Kim returned to Hawai’i and opened the doors to his pediatric dental practice in Kailua, Hawai’i. He is the first pediatric dentist to serve the windward side of O’ahu. In 1989, he opened his second office in Kaneohe, Hawai’i. In 2017, Dr. Kim attended his 50th dental class reunion at Loma Linda University. Through his 42 years of practice in Hawai’i, he dedicated his life to serving and caring for thousands of children. On May 10, 2017, Dr. Kim passed away. His honest, kind, and cheerful presence in our office will always be remembered and missed.
