Howard Y.B. Kim, D.D.S.

Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Howard Kim received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in California. He received his commission in the Air Force after graduation. He volunteered for the Vietnam Conflict but instead was sent to Osan Air Force Base in Korea. He received an honorable discharge from the military at the completion of his term of service.

Dr. Kim reentered the civilian workforce at the Office of Economic Opportunity funded clinic in South Central Los Angeles. It was there that he honed in on his passion for caring for children. He was accepted into the pediatric dental residency at the University of Southern California and upon completion of his training Dr. Kim became the Chairman of Pediatric Dentistry at South Central Multipurpose Health Service Center in Los Angeles.

In 1975, Dr. Kim returned to Hawai’i and opened the doors to his pediatric dental practice in Kailua, Hawai’i. He is the first pediatric dentist to serve the windward side of O’ahu. In 1989, he opened his second office in Kaneohe, Hawai’i. Through his many years of practice, he has dedicated his life to serving and caring for children of O’ahu and the neighbor islands. Dr. Kim is now treating the second and third generation of patients in his practice.

Maile S.C. Kim, D.D.S.

Pediatric Dentist

Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Dr. Maile Kim grew up observing her dad (Dr. Howard Kim) practice pediatric dentistry in Kailua, Hawai’i. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Pacific Union College and upon graduation decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and pursue a career in dentistry.

Dr. Maile graduated with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in California. She completed a one-year General Practice Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York, followed by a two-year pediatric specialty residency at New York University College of Dentistry.

Dr. Maile is a board certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is also on the medical staff at Castle Medical Center where she treats patients under general anesthesia. Since 2009, she has been a consulting faculty for the Lutheran Medical Center Pediatric Dental Residency – Hawai’i training site. Dr. Maile has published research articles in Journal of School Health and Pediatric Dentistry (2012). She is a member of the Hawai’i Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. For the past several years, Dr. Maile has served on numerous outreach trips and provided dental care to underserved areas in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, India, Costa Rica, and Bolivia.

Bren M. Chun, D.D.S.

Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Bren Chun is the newest member of our dental practice. Dr. Bren was inspired to work with children after meeting Dr. Howard Kim and Dr. Maile Kim. He pursued a two year residency in pediatric dentistry at Albert-Einstein School of Medicine- Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York. In July 2014, Dr. Bren returned to Hawaii to become part of the Kim team. 

Dr. Bren graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Music from Pacific Union College and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.   Upon graduation, he joined his father’s family dental practice in Northern California before moving to Hawaii to further his education and to be closer to relatives. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Lutheran Medical Center – Kokua Kalihi Valley Health Center. Dr. Bren so enjoyed caring for the people of Hawaii that he decided to stay one more year, working at Kalihi Palama Health Center and private practice, before heading off to New York for training in pediatric dentistry.

Dr. Bren is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has served on numerous outreach trips and provided dental care to the undeserved areas in South America, Thailand, Fiji, and Philippines. He is excited to be back in Hawaii where he has more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, strum the ukulele, and enjoy married life with Dr. Maile Kim.
